WOMEN OF NO IMPORTANCE

ALAN BENNETT

One goes through life meek as a lamb, while the other unabashedly seeks out attention. The two heroines of British playwright, Alan Bennett’s, parallel one-act plays are polar opposites of each other: a mousy office worker resigned to her uneventful life and a ruthless seeker of others’ shortcomings.

The play examines the lives of two lonely women — brilliantly played by Halina Łabonarska and Małgorzata Niemirska — who do not want to fade into obscurity. It is constructed out of two monologues (A Lady of Letters and A Woman of No Importance) extracted from Bennett’s Talking Heads series — a collection of twelve monologues presenting humorous and equally moving portraits of ordinary people.
