Poland, 2029. The European Union is faltering. Empathy becomes a media gesture, an integration scheme – a political trap, and ‘hospitality’ – a staged format of a political reality show.
The starting point for Un-packing resembles yet another viral format: a left-wing candidate for the European Parliament takes Belarusian refugees into her home. Cameras capture emotions, tensions and family dramas. But something goes wrong. In a flat cluttered with cardboard boxes, a chain of events is set in motion – private traumas collide with the uncomfortable history of Podlasie, an unresolved past, a political game and a repressed identity. Reality cracks – and with it the image of an open, empathetic and democratic Europe.
