Jubilee is a show about power and rebellion where the past meets the present in the spirit of punk.

The production takes inspiration from the cult film by visionary avant-garde British director Derek Jarman, a pioneer of Queer Cinema and an icon of counterculture. Jarman sends Queen Elisabeth I and her court astrologer John Dee on a journey to late 1970s London – a city of chaos, where promiscuity, violence and punk rock hold sway. Another time-travelling, and timeless, character is Ariel from The Tempest, who tries to establish a connection between the past and the collapsing present.

Jarman's Jubilee is both a punk film and a critique of counterculture. Instead of delivering on its promise of freedom, punk has become yet another product that can be bought and sold, while “No Future” is now a slogan on expensive T-shirts.

The meeting of these two eras shows that history is never an objective record of events, but a construct that is carefully curated and overwritten by successive structures of power. The myth of the idealized Virgin Queen is the starting point for critical reflection on the origins of capitalism, colonialism, and fantasies of national greatness. Jaszczyński's production puts rebellion at the centre, as something that capitalism, paradoxically, cannot exist without.
